Nature or Nurture?

I confess to being confused.    If you happened to be walking along the street and needed to know the time, would you approach a stranger and say, with aggression,  ”Hey you!   Tell me the f***ing time?”   The response would presumably be negative.

Why on earth would a previously well-mannered and mostly considerate daughter, turn into the teenager from hell?

Because she can???

Her mother makes excuses for her.   ‘Hormones’.  And, ”She only talks to me this way” as though this makes it perfectly acceptable.    And mother continues to cluck, and pacify, and generally indulge this thoroughly ill mannered and unpleasant person.

Half the problem may be that by law you may not smack your children.   Ever, under any circumstances.   They are instructed from an early age at school that if their parents so much as lift a hand, they can lay charges.    The-powers that-be should take a good look at nature.   Ever seen a lioness deliver a well deserved clout?   And the cub learns quickly that unacceptable behaviour has unpleasant repercussions.

It never for an instant occurred to me to insult my parents.   Apart from the prospect of instant death, I needed their good will.   They were the ones who worked their buns off to keep food on the table and a roof over my head.  They weren’t perfect but they did their best.    I loved them and they loved me and it would have hurt them terribly.

They say that grandchildren are a parent’s revenge.   I’m relieved that I probably won’t be around to enjoy :-)

About footsy2

An ex South African, I lived for a number of years in the UK, got fed up with the weather, opted for early retirement, bought a beat up old campervan and high tailed it out of there, in search of the sun. Have found heaven under the avo trees, a stone throw from the Med, acquired two darling dogs, a variety of cats, along with some delightful neighbours. To keep myself busy, I paint, illustrate kiddies books, write, blog, volunteer at the local donkey sanctuary and somehow manage to get myself involved in any number of hair brained schemes.

  1. I find there is a general lack of good manners nowadays footsy and I agree that in many cases is is way out of hand.
    *hugs*

Your quote is so true. My parents would have hammered me both physcially and verbally if I’d been rude let alone swear at them or to them.

Oh yes, I so agree with you. I was brought up to respect my parents and all other adults with whom I came in contact. I would never have dreamed of speaking to them in this fashion. I’d have got such a hiding, and would have felt so bad about myself too.

Good manners are few and far between nowadays.

Hi foots… when I read this in my email, I had to come and give you a high five! Exactly what I’ve been saying. However, I disagree with the revenge part. I say grandchildren are the reward for growing children. I’m about to share this on FB!! :) . Lots of hugs xxx

I agree with you footsy, today’s kids are too full of cheek. I also blame the television sitcoms in which children backchat their parents without suffering any consequences. If I had tried that my mother would have slapped me into the next week!

I’ve found you! I went just the other week to your other blog and left a comment and wondered why you hadn’t posted since my previous visit, now I know why! Just spent some time catching up with you on Mud Island, your bungalow is very cute.

  9. Still wouldn’t swear in front of my parents even now but I am saddened that my teenage nieces have turned into aliens. One of the things I loved about living in Turkey was the respect that was given to the elders.

‘You are behaving like a brat, and I am going to smack you. As you have been taught, you can then lay charges. Following that, you will then probably be taken away from all the comforts of this home and put into an institution, and you will have deserved it. Your choice.’

  11. Madhu says:

Absolutely agree! A bit of fear is essential to instill respect :-)

  12. Lisaman says:

I was definitely bought up where we respected our elders no matter what.. The world has gone soft and we have created monsters!!
