I visited town a couple of Saturdays ago and was startled to find it over run with elegant ladies of a certain age – all togged out in amazing red hats and purple gear. They didn’t appear to be selling anything, promoting anything, or supporting anything.
I eventually cornered a couple and asked what it was all about. She told me to google Red Hatters.
And this is what I found.
“A Warning”
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple.
With a red hat that doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me,
and I shall spend my pension
on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals,
And say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired,
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells,
And run my stick along the public railings,
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people’s gardens,
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat,
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go,
Or only bread and pickles for a week,
And hoard pens and pencils and beer mats
And things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry,
And pay our rent and not swear in the street,
And set a good example for the children.
We will have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me
Are not too shocked and surprised,
When suddenly I am old
and start to wear purple!

The pic is from their website – although I should have taken my own. Didn’t like to intrude – they were having such a good time. Red Hatter I spoke to suggested I join. Said I would fit in.
I took it as a compliment :-).
That struck a chord as I’m wearing purple today. No red though 😦
I think the combination looks very decadent and striking.
🙂
What a great photo, footsy. I’ve loved this poem ever since I first read it. 🙂
I’ve frequently heard ‘when I am old I shall wear purple’, but never read the entire until last week 🙂
It’s getting to the time when we need to read and memorise the whole poem. 😳
🙂
We have them around here, too. They’re a wild bunch.
Good to hear. No temptation to join? If you’re under 50 you can join but must wear pink 🙂
Under 50 definitely leaves me out, not to mention an aversion to wearing pink! 😉
Come to think of it… I never had much sobriety in my youth either.
Me neither 🙂
What a great concept! I love the poem too:)
I’m not a great ‘joiner’ of groups in general but this is tempting – if only to wear an outrageous hat :-).
I think red and purple look fantastic together – and yes those wonderful hats. An all round inspiring post.
🙂
The combo is strangely attractive. Colour clashes are just another myth. Not to say that those ladies are all not utterly dotty, of course …
There is pleasure in madness that only mad men know?
That is probably it.
i thought i commented on this. i’m more than halfway there already
how is that possible?
Not you Babycakes 🙂
wanna bet? I’m struggling to feel creative about writing footy… do you think i’d feel more inspired if i wore more red and purple together?
You are not alone here. I haven’t felt like writing anything in yonks – somehow don’t think red and purple will help. Maybe yellow?
I have always loved that poem! Thanks for sharing it. Happy New Year, Footsy!
